Simple To Do List — Help Guide

Getting Started

Simple To Do List is a straightforward task manager. Add tasks, check them off when done, and stay on top of your day.

Adding tasks

Switch to the All view. Type a task in the Add item field at the bottom of the screen and tap the + button (or press Enter). With categories switched on, a short dialog lets you file the task as you add it.

Voice input

Tap the Add item field, then tap the microphone icon on your keyboard to add tasks by voice.

To Do & All Views

The app has two views, shown as chips on the action bar just below the top bar. Switch between them at any time.

To Do

The working view. Checked tasks disappear as you tick them, so what is left is what is left to do:

  • Tick tasks off as you complete them — they drop out of the list
  • Undo — a snackbar appears after each tick with an Undo button
  • Confetti — tick off the last visible task and the empty screen arrives with a celebration

All

Everything, finished or not, for when you are organising rather than working:

  • Quick Add — the add-task bar sits at the bottom of the screen
  • Drag & Drop — drag handles let you reorder your list by priority
  • Sort A–Z or Z–A and Delete Checked Items from the action bar menu

Both views

  • Search — tap the magnifying glass to filter your list
  • Edit, Delete and Reminders — tap any task

You can choose which of these appear in Settings → Action Menu, and where drag handles show in Settings → Behaviour.

Categories & Subcategories

Categories group your tasks; subcategories group them again inside a category. A category might be Work, with subcategories for Emails and Meetings. They are part of Premium, and they are optional — switch them off in Settings and the app is a plain list again, with nothing lost.

Setting them up

  • Settings → Categories to add, rename, reorder or delete them
  • Each category has its own subcategories switch, so you can use two levels where they help and one level where they do not
  • A category that is in use cannot be deleted — move those tasks first, so nothing is quietly reassigned

Using them

  • Tasks show under their category and subcategory headings, and anything unassigned sits under No Category
  • Collapse a heading with the caret to put a whole group out of the way, or use Expand All / Collapse All from the menu
  • Filter with the funnel icon to show one category at a time — tick off the last visible task and you still get the celebration
  • Categories are included in your Google Drive backup, along with your settings

Using Your To Do List

Here is a simple workflow:

Setting up (All)

  • Switch to the All view
  • Add tasks as they come to mind
  • Drag to prioritise — put the most important tasks at the top
  • With Premium, give each task a category and the list groups itself

Getting things done (To Do)

  • Switch to To Do to focus on what is left
  • Tick tasks off as you complete them — they disappear from the list
  • If you tick the wrong one, hit Undo on the snackbar
  • When the last one goes, enjoy the confetti

Use Delete Checked Items in the All view to clear out completed tasks, or leave them ticked for your records.

Google Drive Backup & Restore

Backup & Restore is a premium feature.

Backing up

Main menu → Backup & Restore → sign in → Backup.

Restoring

Tap Restore. A confirmation dialog will appear — restoring replaces all current tasks.

New phone

  1. Back up on your old phone
  2. Install on your new phone
  3. Sign in to the same Google account and restore

Backup says it failed, or sign-in does not seem to work?

A one-time reset of the app’s Google access fixes this. First, on the Backup & Restore screen, sign out and sign in again. If Google asks you to allow access, you’re done — try your backup again.

If it signs you in without asking for permission and backup still fails:

  1. Open myaccount.google.com/connections
  2. Tap the app in the list of connections
  3. Tap See details
  4. Tap Remove all access and confirm
  5. Back in the app, sign in and re-authorise when Google asks — backup will then work

The items on your phone are not affected by any of these steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I reorder tasks?

Drag the handle () on the right side of each task. Handles appear in the All view, and you can hide them in Settings → Behaviour. With categories on, a task can only be dragged within its own group.

Q: Can I undo a delete?

Yes — an undo bar appears when you delete a single task. Delete Checked Items cannot be undone.

Q: Does the app collect my data?

No. All data is stored locally. Google Drive backup stores data in your own Google Drive only.

Q: Why can’t I delete a category?

A category that still has tasks in it cannot be deleted, and the app will tell you how many are using it. Move those tasks to another category first. This is deliberate: deleting it for you would silently change where your tasks live.
